International Affairs (IR75)

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Master of International Affairs is a five-year combined degree program offered by the School of Global Policy and Strategy along with UC San Diego's undergraduate International Studies Program (ISP). The program is open only to ISP-Economics, ISP-Political Science and ISP-International Business majors at UC San Diego. Prior to submitting your application, you must meet with an academic advisor in the International Studies Program Office to ensure you are eligible to apply. Application materials must be uploaded or postmarked received by April 10.

Program Overview The BA/MIA program requires students to have a primary track (8 courses) and a secondary track (5 courses), one each in Economics and Political Science, in either order. The undergraduate requirements are different than those for the standard International Studies-Economics, International Studies-Political Science and International Studies-International Business tracks. The final year of the BA/MIA program incorporates graduate-level course work at the School.

The regional requirement for the B.A. in the International Studies Program is separate from the Eleanor Roosevelt College regional specialization and the School’s country/regional specialization. The courses cannot overlap or be double counted. Please meet with an ISP academic advisor to ensure you are eligible to apply.

Career tracks are designed for students to acquire expertise in a functional area of their choice and consist of five courses from a prescribed list: two required and three electives. Students will choose one of the following career tracks:

International Economics
International Environmental Governance
International Development and Nonprofit Management
International Management
International Politics

Students will choose one of the following country/regional specializations:
Latin America
Southeast Asia

A test of English language proficiency is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction and in a country where English is a dominant language.

The following test(s) are accepted by this department:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
PTE (Pearson Test of English)

Language Tests are not required for international applicants - they meet the criteria based on coursework completed at UCSD by the time they apply to the BA/.MIA
Letters of Recommendation

Minimum of 2 recommendations required.

Your research interests and/or professional objectives in international affairs
How your background has prepared you to pursue these objectives
How the GPS program will help you achieve these objectives
