UC San Diego's Department of Music is internationally recognized as the West Coast's premiere center for education and innovation in new music. Founded in 1966 by composers Robert Erickson and Will Ogdon, it was designed to provide a unique environment in which composers, performers and scholars could collaborate and engage with the most vital ideas and newest technologies in order to push the boundaries of contemporary music. The Department offers Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Musical Arts (M.A., Ph.D., and D.M.A.) degrees.

GRE General is recommended. As of 2019, applicants are no longer required to submit scores for either the GRE General or Subject Tests. Applicants can optionally submit scores for the GRE General Test (Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical sections) |
English Proficiency Exams (international applicants only) |
A test of English language proficiency is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction and in a country where English is a dominant language.
