Program Overview The newly approved University of California San Diego Master of Public Health (MPH) program will commence training its first cohort of students in Fall 2018. It is designed to be a contemporary, academically rigorous 2-year program with both thesis and experiential capstone options. The MPH program will provide instruction in the core public health disciplines of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Policy and Management, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Further, it will address key aspects of 21st century public health, by leveraging existing strengths of the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health (FMPH) and UC San Diego colleagues in different areas such as climate change, data science and mental health. MPH students will benefit not only from high quality academic training, but also from opportunities to engage in innovative public health research and public health practice in community settings.

Basic Requirement

Admissions Tests

GRE General or MCAT is required.

Medical students can substitute MCAT for GRE scores. Neither GRE nor MCAT scores will be required for applicants with prior graduate degrees from accredited U.S. institutions.
English Proficiency Exams

(international applicants only)

A test of English language proficiency is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction and in a country where English is a dominant language.

The following test(s) are accepted by this department:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
PTE (Pearson Test of English)

Letters of Recommendation

Minimum of 3 recommendations required.

Two should be from faculty who can speak to your academic performance. The third letter can be from a mentor, advisor or employer who has knowledge of your research experience.

Statement of Purpose


-Discuss why you are interested in the UC San Diego Master of Public Health program, your strengths that you would bring to the program, and those areas in which you would like to increase your expertise.
-Discuss your preference for which concentration (Epidemiology or Health Behavior) you would like to pursue. (NOTE: Your preference will not affect your chances of admission.)
