Area of Study Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science
Program Overview The MPH program is designed to be a contemporary, academically rigorous 2-year program with both thesis and experiential capstone options. The program will provide instruction in the core public health disciplines of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Policy and Management, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Further, it will address key aspects of 21st century public health, by leveraging existing strengths of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and UC San Diego colleagues in different areas such as climate change, data science and mental health. MPH students will benefit not only from high quality academic training, but also from opportunities to engage in innovative public health research and public health practice in community settings.

Basic Requirement

Admissions Tests
We are temporarily waiving the GRE requirement for the Fall 2021 application cycle due to the impacts of COVID-19.
English Proficiency Exams

(international applicants only)

A test of English language proficiency is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction and in a country where English is a dominant language.

The following test(s) are accepted by this department:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
PTE (Pearson Test of English)

Letters of Recommendation

Minimum of 3 recommendations required.

Two should be from faculty who can speak to your academic performance. The third letter can be from a mentor, advisor or employer who has knowledge of your research experience.

Statement of Purpose


Your statement of purpose (approximately 1500 word limit) should address the following items:
-Describe those experiences that have shaped your interest in public health.
-Discuss why you are interested in the Master of Public Health program at UC San Diego.
-Discuss the strengths you bring with you and areas in which you would like to increase your expertise.
-Describe any prior experience you’ve had engaging in public health research.
-Discuss your preference for which concentration (Epidemiology, Health Behavior, Public Mental Health, or Technology and Precision Health) you would like to pursue. (NOTE: Your preference will not affect your chances of admission.)
