Applied Mathematics (MA75)

At UC San Diego, we provide courses of study that introduce students to the fundamentals of mathematics and allow them to master the most important parts of the subject both pure and applied. By offering four graduate programs, and with a faculty encompassing a variety of fields, the department seeks to accommodate varied student interests in mathematics, encouraging an interdisciplinary focus that fosters program diversity.

Please note that October 27, 2018 will be the last date to take the GRE Math Subject test before the application deadline. Our department does not have a minimum required score for the GRE Math Subject test.
English Proficiency Exams

(international applicants only)

A test of English language proficiency is required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction and in a country where English is a dominant language.

The following test(s) are accepted by this department:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
PTE (Pearson Test of English)

The university-required minimum overall TOEFL score is 85 (internet based test). The minimum recommended TOEFL speaking score for the Math Department is 23. The university-required minimum overall IELTS score is Band Score 7. The minimum recommended IELTS speaking score for the Math Department is 7.
Letters of Recommendation

Minimum of 3 recommendations required.

Letters from academia are highly preferred. Please do not have more than three (3) letters sent. Additional letters do not improve your standing as an applicant.

GRE Subject Test is recommended.

The requirement for the GRE Math Subject test may be waived ONLY if you will have completed a bachelor's degree in Mathematics (Pure or Applied) by the time you start UC San Diego. However, if your bachelor's degree is NOT in either Pure or Applied Mathematics, you MUST submit a GRE Math Subject test score.

Your diploma and/or transcript must reflect the specific major of either Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics & Applied Mathematics to waive the GRE Math Subject requirement when applying to the M.S. Statistics program. Sub-disciplines that could be considered applied math (such as Statistics, Accounting, Actuarial Math, Financial Math, Economics, Information Management, etc.) will NOT waive the GRE Math Subject requirement.
