Bioengineering is the integration of engineering, biology and medicine. Research areas of the department include bioinformatics/genomics, cardiovascular system engineering, tissue engineering/cell-matrix engineering, and molecular biomechanics.

The Department of Bioengineering has an NIH Training Grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute on Cardiovascular Engineering Science. Admitted students with a US citizenship or Permanent Residency and the appropriate knowledge and background is invited to apply for the second year. The Department of Bioengineering participates in a new interdisciplinary graduate training program at the interfaces between the biological, medical, physical and engineering sciences.
